Se kaikista mahtavin kanjoni - The grandest canyon of them all

On this trip we are seeing a lot of canyons, but now we were heading to the grandest of them all: Grand Canyon. We had decided to stay at North Rim, which was first of all conveniently along our way and secondly less crowded - I had read that about 90% of the tourists at Grand Canyon go to the South Rim, so the north is always considerably more quiet. Sure, this also means there are less services such as accommodation and restaurants. Therefore we had booked accommodation very well in advance, a cabin at Kaibab Lodge, as it would have been way too cold to camp. As the North Rim is higher up than the South, it means the climate is that much colder and also here you will find evergreen alpine forest as opposed to the desert. The drive from Bryce was about 3 hrs and we did a good pit stop in the biggest town along the way called Kanab, as we needed to do laundry and stock up on food for the next couple of days. It gets pretty quiet on Sundays in a small town in Utah, let me tell you! Luckily there was one grocery store and a coin laundry open. However, for lunch we could not find anything else but McDonald’s... Oh well, we felt really American while eating junk food at a coin laundry!

Saavuimme majoitukseen hyvissä ajoin, joten ehdimme saman iltapäivän aikana ajaa tarvittavat 24 km itse kanjonin reunalle.
We got to our accommodation early enough, so we had time to drive the required 24km until the edge of the canyon. Here you can find a Visitor Centre, much more expensive cabins than ours as well as a short hiking route Bright Angel’s Trail leading to a great view point. You cannot really miss the canyon though as you are on the edge of it - it is one shockingly big canyon! Absolutely incredible sight. We walked through the Bright Angel’s Trail and continued along the edge of the canyon. It was really lovely to stroll around and sitting down at the edge of the canyon to admire the view. At sunset we finally returned to our cabin, which luckily had a good heating system, as the temperature outside plunged below zero after the sun went down.

At the Bright Angel Trail

Angel’s Window-nimisen upean kivimuodostelman, jonka voisi hyvinkin kuvitella muistuttavan enkelin ikkunaa. Patikkareitin lopusta näkee pohjoisreunan parhaat näköalat, kuten Temples-nimellä tunnetut, hindutemppeleitä muistuttavat kivimuodostelmat. Kävimme kiertämässä myös Cape Final-reitin, jossa käveltiin melko pitkälti havumetsän siimeksessä eikä itse kanjonia näkynyt kuin vasta viime hetkillä, jolloin se avautui yhtäkkiä kaikessa komeudessaan eteemme. Aivan mahtava paikka nauttia picnic-lounas!

Angel's Window

The following morning we headed out bright and early, as we wanted to do the Grand Canyon North Rim Scenic drive and do several little hikes along the way. At 8am it was rather chilly, but fortunately the sun started warming us up soon enough. Early on we were hiking all by ourselves without seeing anybody else, in a couple of hours some people started to show up but it was never crowded and there was no problem finding parking spots at any of the stops. Different sides of the canyon offered wholly variable views, as if you would have been looking at a different canyon altogether.  We started off by driving until Cape Royal, where you can do a short (less than a mile) easy hiking trail. Along this trail you can see for example Angel’s Window, one of the most impressive views. At the end of the trail you can see arguably the best view on the North Rim, such as the Temples. You could tell why Temples was named, as the rock formations really reminded me of the hindu temples. We also went around the Cape Final Trail which took us through the pine forest most of the way and you could only see the canyon at the last moment, when the view suddenly opened up in front of you in all its awe-inspiring glory. What a place to enjoy a picnic lunch!

Colorado River from the air

A few days later we found ourselves back in Las Vegas, where this road trip started from originally. We got to see Grand Canyon once more, this time from way up high - we did a scenic flight with a small plane from Las Vegas. Booking well ahead we got a discounted rate of 104 USD per person. They came to pick us up from the hotel and drove us about an hour away to Boulder City airport, where we took off from. It was an experience to fly above the desert, although we had just driven through it, it looked way more amazing from above. Not to mention the canyon itself! You could only truly appreciate its sheer scale from the air. That was a trip definitely worth its price! This ended up being the very last thing we did in the US, as the same evening we took a flight to Cancun. Mexico, here we come!
